This flower has been given a number of interesting names in German-speaking countries, including Gretl in the shrub, Gretl in the heck, Gretchen in the bush, Greterl in the nest, Venus-haired, Bride in hair…
The name Gretl in the bushes alludes to an Austrian legend according to which the rich farmer’s daughter Gretl had to renounce her love for the chastiser’s son Hans at her father’s request. After longing for each other, they were transformed into flowers. While Gretl became the maiden in the green, Hans became the common chicory. (see Wkipedia)
An exceptionally beautiful flower, which also took an extraordinary amount of work to cut out. But it was well worth it!
